Should I get a Nerve Conduction Study to Confirm I have CTS?

Carpal Tunnel Question

Nerve Conduction Study For CTS“My Neurologist tells me I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with numb and tingling hands waking me up several times per night.   It is driving me crazy. He says I need an EMG test to confirm his diagnosis, then he says he will give me a Wrist Splint.   I have to wait three weeks for the testing.

I asked him for why not start treating my condition right away. He said, If we did that, CTS might not show up on the study.  I don’t want to own my Carpal Tunnel or document it in a study. I just want to get better and start sleeping through the night and stop dropping things and get on with my life.   What do you recommend?   Should I get the Nerve Study? Can I start treatment today?”

Thanks for your questions and sharing your experience with the Neurologists.   Your instincts are correct. There are only a couple of reasons to get a nerve conductivity Study or EMG Nerve Test.   The primary reason is if you want to have Carpal Tunnel Surgery. The insurance companies require a formal Nerve Conduction Study before they will approve the surgical procedure.

Nerve Conduction Study For Carpal Tunnel A second reason is if your symptoms are confusing and could be confused with another ailment.   Occasionally people present unique symptoms that could be caused by CTS or another condition.   These would be the only reasons to proceed with the formal Nerve Testing immediately.

The Symptoms you described are classic Carpal Tunnel and the diagnosis can be made with confidence that you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.   The numb and tingling hands waking one up several times each night is a classic symptom of CTS.   Dropping things is another classic symptom.   When a person has two or more classic symptoms, there is better than a 95% chance that they have CTS. You do not have to wonder at this point.

Insomnia With Carpal TunnelThe Nerve Conduction Study is relatively expensive and offers no therapeutic value. In other words, the test doesn’t help you get better. It can cost up to $1200. Even with Health Insurance your share of the cost can be substantial with deductibles and copays.

Some people say the Nerve Study is extremely uncomfortable and others say it was not a big deal and they felt no discomfort.   That is how it is with nerves. People with the same nerve condition present a wide variety of symptoms. But why submit to the waiting, the potential for discomfort from the nerve test and the costs if you don’t really need to do it?

The main concern is to get you better.   The most dangerous symptom you described is chronic sleep interruption.   This can lead to a host of serious health complications.   So, the key would be to get you sleeping through the night without regular interruptions and restoring your hand function during the day so you can work and do the things you need to do.

Ironically, the best way to get better is not using the rigid hand braces nor wrist splints your neurologist talked about.   This is another thing traditional medicine has gotten wrong when it comes to CTS.   Wrist splints and rigid hand braces immobilize the hand and prevent movement.   This sometimes relieves discomfort in the beginning, but in the long run rigid braces and splints actually make Carpal Tunnel worse and will result in muscle atrophy and further injury to the soft tissue in the hand and wrist.

Wrist Splints and Rigid Hand braces do have their place in medicine. The appropriate application for these devices is immobilizing broken bones or sprained ligaments.

Nerve disorders can be tricky to diagnosis for the average medical professional.   You can do a self-diagnosis using the method here https://www.mycarpaltunnel.com/symptoms-carpal-tunnel-syndrome.shtml    while you wait for a formal diagnosis.   If you are comfortable with the odds and percentage probabilities you can move forward with a natural treatment before you see a Neurologist.

Neurologists are the nerve experts in medicine.  If you have questions about what is the causing the symptoms you are experiencing,  these medical professionals (MD’s) will be able to identify exactly where the symptoms are emanating from within your body.   The cost for a Nerve Conductivity Study can range from $1,000 to $2,500.   If you have Health Insurance with a low deductible it should cover most of the cost.  If you have a high deductible Health Insurance Plan, you will likely be footing most of the bill for this test.   Because of the wide range of the cost of the Nerve Study, it is important and totally fine to ask how much the clinic will charge for the test before you agree to have it done.

Some Patients report the Nerve Study to be quite painful and unsettling. Other patients say the Nerve Test was a little uncomfortable, but no big deal and was not painful.
